What is Claude Opus 5?

Claude Opus 5 is Anthropic's model for complex coding and professional work, released July 24, 2026. It is designed for tasks that involve investigating, making changes and checking the result across several steps. As checked September 8, 2026, the official model page lists it as the latest Opus, with Claude API ID claude-opus-5. It accepts text and images and returns text. File creation, code execution and browsing depend on the tools provided by the application.

Claude Opus 5 Capabilities

  • Keep a large body of evidence in view: The API supports a 1M-token context window and up to 128K output tokens for ordinary requests. Supply named sources and ask for page or file references. A large window makes comparison practical, but does not guarantee complete recall or override an application's upload limits.
  • Adjust reasoning to the task: Thinking is on by default, with high effort as the default. Thinking can be disabled only at high or below. Try lower effort for routine edits and increase it when a difficult task benefits; judge the checked result, elapsed time and token use together.
  • Count reasoning in your budget: Standard Claude API pricing is USD $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens. Thinking tokens are billed as output. Caching, batch processing, tools and Fast mode have separate pricing rules. These are provider rates, not Ottermind prices.

Tasks to Try with Claude Opus 5

Give each task a concrete deliverable, relevant sources and an acceptance check. These are suggested workflows, not guaranteed outcomes.

  • Fix a bug across several files

Share a reproducible failure, logs and the relevant code. Ask for the root cause, a focused patch and a regression test. Run the test and inspect the diff before accepting a claim that the issue is fixed.

  • Audit a workbook before sharing it

Provide the tables, formula definitions and reporting period. Ask for inconsistent totals, missing assumptions and cells to revisit. Recalculate the important figures; a convincing explanation is not proof that a formula is correct.

  • Revise a presentation from evidence

Supply the source report, audience and slide outline. Ask for one supported claim per slide and explicit gaps in the evidence. Use the AI presentation makers guide to choose the next production step, then check the final layout.

  • Review a UI against its screenshot

Pair a screenshot with the component code and desired behavior. Ask for a list of visual and functional mismatches, then a bounded revision. Continue the accepted brief in the AI Website Builder and inspect desktop and mobile results.

When Opus 5 Is Worth Evaluating

Reasons to try it

  • More room for difficult work: Anthropic's current comparison positions Opus 5 for complex coding and enterprise work, and Sonnet 5 for speed and intelligence. Use the same task and acceptance criteria to decide whether Opus earns its higher rate.
  • A task can include visual inspection: The Opus 5 prompting guide covers charts, diagrams, spreadsheets and slides. Give it the desired format and tools to inspect the artifact; text-only chat cannot independently verify a rendered file.

Where to stay involved

  • Keep intent and scope explicit: State which requirements are fixed, which files may change and when the task is done. Ask the model to identify missing evidence before taking action. Review unexpected changes and stop a correction loop to re-establish a reproducible failure.
  • Control answer length separately: Specify the size of the deliverable, such as a one-page memo or five findings with evidence. Lower effort controls reasoning, but does not reliably shorten the visible response. Keep useful analysis while removing repeated narration.

What Users Report

These public discussions describe individual experiences, not a consensus or a controlled comparison. Client settings, tasks and usage plans differ.

Proactivity can conflict with intent

One Claude Code user reports assumption-driven bugs, repeated corrections and verbose writing on websites and creative projects. Replies include both similar complaints and good results. Treat scope control and writing style as things to test on your own work.

Access and usable capacity are different

The launch discussion includes successful app access, exhausted quotas and disagreement over a client's displayed context size. One reply reports finding bugs missed by another model. None of these anecdotes establishes today's limits or a general quality ranking.

Claude Opus 5 FAQ

What is the exact API model ID?

Use claude-opus-5 on the Claude API. The official release date is July 24, 2026. Provider-specific identifiers can differ; do not substitute an older Opus ID and assume it is the same model.

Does it generate images or finished files?

Its documented native output is text. It can analyze images and write instructions or code for artifacts. Creating an actual workbook, slide deck or image requires appropriate application tools and a separate check of the output.

Does every request stay on Opus 5?

Anthropic's launch documentation describes safeguard fallbacks to Opus 4.8 in Claude apps and an optional API fallback feature. Check the returned model and your provider's routing. This does not describe or guarantee Ottermind's routing.

Is Claude API pricing the price in Studio?

No. The quoted USD rates describe Anthropic's API. Studio access, supported models and charges depend on your account. Opening Studio transfers your prompt; it does not establish Claude Opus 5 access or free usage.
