What is Claude Opus 4.8?

Claude Opus 4.8 is Anthropic's coding and reasoning model released May 28, 2026. It accepts text and images and produces text. Its release emphasized better judgment and more candid reporting of uncertainty during extended tasks. Checked September 8, 2026: the version-specific documentation lists 4.8 as active legacy. Claude Opus 5 is the newer Opus release; 4.8 remains a distinct API model, claude-opus-4-8. Access in a particular chat app depends on its model selector and account terms.

Capabilities and Costs

  • Keep the source material together: The documented API context is 1 million tokens, with up to 128,000 output tokens for ordinary requests. This can accommodate a substantial source packet, but does not guarantee that every detail will be recovered. Ask for file, section or timestamp references.
  • Match effort to the deliverable: Opus 4.8 supports adaptive thinking, with high as its default effort. Start with a bounded task and measure completion time as well as accepted output. More reasoning can help a difficult decision, but cannot replace missing source material or an executable check.
  • Separate standard and Fast pricing: Claude API rates are USD $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens. Research-preview Fast mode costs $10 and $50 respectively; paying more for speed does not buy a different model. Batch offers a 50% input/output discount and cannot be combined with Fast mode. These are provider rates, not Ottermind prices.

Tasks Worth Trying with Opus 4.8

Use these as concrete evaluation tasks, with an output you can inspect and a clear stopping condition.

  • Rehearse an SDK migration

Provide the old client calls, target SDK documentation and representative request/response examples. Ask for a compatibility checklist, a minimal migration patch and tests for payload changes. Run those tests in a staging environment before replacing the working integration.

  • Audit an agent's handoff

Pair the original task with tool logs, changed files and test output. Request a table separating completed, attempted and unverified work, with evidence for every row. Re-run the critical checks; a confident completion message is not itself evidence.

  • Revise a chapter without losing its voice

Supply the draft, character notes and a short passage that captures the desired voice. Ask for continuity problems first, then a revision limited to the selected scene. Compare the result for changed motives, invented facts and prose that no longer sounds like the narrator.

  • Reconstruct an incident timeline

Combine support messages, deployment records and timestamps from logs. Ask for an ordered chronology that separates observed events from hypotheses and identifies missing intervals. Verify time zones and link each important event back to its source before sharing the incident report.

Keep a Working Baseline, Test the Successor

Reasons to consider 4.8

  • A migration destination for older integrations: The deprecation table names 4.8 as a replacement for retired Opus 4 and 4.1. That makes it relevant when maintaining an older integration. Update the model ID and test behavior; a replacement recommendation is not a guarantee of identical responses.
  • A useful baseline for a controlled comparison: An existing set of successful 4.8 runs gives you something concrete to compare. The Opus 5 announcement claims improved performance at the same base price. Use the Claude Opus 5 page to frame a trial; keeping 4.8 is not a base-rate saving.

Where to stay involved

  • Define when the work should stop: Specify authorized edits, the deliverable and actual blockers. If the model pauses prematurely, restate the remaining checklist. If it changes unrelated material, narrow the scope and inspect the diff. Application permission settings are a separate issue.
  • Check claims against the record: Ask the model to label uncertainty and distinguish proposed actions from executed ones. Verify output against logs, sources or tests, especially after a long session. Better uncertainty reporting does not make unsupported conclusions safe to accept.

What Community Users Report

These are individual reports, not a consensus or a controlled benchmark. Tasks, clients and effort settings differ.

A quick first impression is only a first impression

In the launch discussion, one commenter described 4.8 as intuitive and fast after roughly 30 minutes of use. Much of the thread discusses earlier versions or expectations. That is too little evidence to promise a speed or quality improvement on a sustained workload.

Stopping and verbosity can interrupt work

In a later discussion, the author reports 4.8 stopping partway through an already requested task; replies mention excessive narration and unrelated code changes. The author distinguishes this from tool permission dialogs. Test follow-through and revision scope in your own client.

1

Set the boundaries

Describe the task, supply the relevant evidence and say what must remain unchanged. Include the expected output and the checks that determine completion.

2

Check the model in Studio

Continue to Studio and sign in if required. Select Claude Opus 4.8 if available to your account, then check tools and usage terms. This page does not automatically select the model or establish access.

Review the result and carry it forward

Check source references, run relevant tests and revise the specific gaps. Keep the accepted version with its evidence so the next connected task starts from a reliable handoff.

Claude Opus 4.8 FAQ

Is Claude Opus 4.8 retired?

No. At the September 8, 2026 check, the Claude API lists it as active; the model overview labels it legacy. Retirement is not sooner than May 28, 2027, which is an earliest boundary, not an announced shutdown date. Check your provider separately.

What model ID should an API integration use?

The Claude API ID is claude-opus-4-8. Do not substitute claude-opus-5 and assume unchanged behavior. A chat product's visible model name and the API model lifecycle are separate things.

Can it execute code or generate a finished document?

Its native output is text. Code execution, browsing and file creation require tools in the host application. A written plan is not a completed migration, and a document outline is not a rendered file.

Is Fast mode or Studio included in the quoted API price?

No. Standard and Fast API rates are separate, and a full bill can include caching, tools and other modifiers. Studio availability and charges depend on your account. Opening Studio transfers your prompt; it does not guarantee free use or Opus 4.8 access.
