Documents
SignNow
Try itAccess SignNow's e-signature API through managed OAuth to upload, send, sign, and manage documents.
What it does
Connects to SignNow via a proxy that injects OAuth tokens, so a single API key authorizes requests to documents, templates, signature invites, folders, and event subscriptions. Supports PDF upload, collapsed or zipped download, template creation from documents, freeform signature invites, embeddable signing links, document merging, and webhook registration for document and invite events. All write operations require explicit user approval, and access is scoped to the connected SignNow account.
When to use it
- Upload a PDF and send a signature invite
- Turn an existing PDF into a reusable template
- Register webhooks for document completion events
- Merge multiple documents into one PDF
The skill document
SignNow
Access the SignNow API with managed OAuth authentication. Upload documents, send signature invites, manage templates, and automate e-signature workflows.
Quick Start
# Get current user info
python <<'EOF'
import urllib.request, os, json
req = urllib.request.Request('https://api.maton.ai/signnow/user')
req.add_header('Authorization', f'Bearer {os.environ["MATON_API_KEY"]}')
print(json.dumps(json.load(urllib.request.urlopen(req)), indent=2))
EOF
Base URL
https://api.maton.ai/signnow/{resource}
Maton proxies requests to api.signnow.com and automatically injects your OAuth token.
Authentication
All requests require the Maton API key in the Authorization header:
Authorization: Bearer $MATON_API_KEY
Environment Variable: Set your API key as MATON_API_KEY:
export MATON_API_KEY="YOUR_API_KEY"
Getting Your API Key
- Sign in or create an account at maton.ai
- Go to maton.ai/settings
- Copy your API key
Connection Management
Manage your SignNow OAuth connections at https://api.maton.ai.
List Connections
python <<'EOF'
import urllib.request, os, json
req = urllib.request.Request('https://api.maton.ai/connections?app=signnow&status=ACTIVE')
req.add_header('Authorization', f'Bearer {os.environ["MATON_API_KEY"]}')
print(json.dumps(json.load(urllib.request.urlopen(req)), indent=2))
EOF
Create Connection
python <<'EOF'
import urllib.request, os, json
data = json.dumps({'app': 'signnow'}).encode()
req = urllib.request.Request('https://api.maton.ai/connections', data=data, method='POST')
req.add_header('Authorization', f'Bearer {os.environ["MATON_API_KEY"]}')
req.add_header('Content-Type', 'application/json')
print(json.dumps(json.load(urllib.request.urlopen(req)), indent=2))
EOF
Get Connection
python <<'EOF'
import urllib.request, os, json
req = urllib.request.Request('https://api.maton.ai/connections/{connection_id}')
req.add_header('Authorization', f'Bearer {os.environ["MATON_API_KEY"]}')
print(json.dumps(json.load(urllib.request.urlopen(req)), indent=2))
EOF
Response:
{
"connection": {
"connection_id": "{connection_id}",
"status": "ACTIVE",
"creation_time": "2026-02-08T20:47:23.019763Z",

"url": "https://connect.maton.ai/?session_token=...",
"app": "signnow",
"metadata": {}
}
}
Open the returned url in a browser to complete OAuth authorization.
Delete Connection
python <<'EOF'
import urllib.request, os, json
req = urllib.request.Request('https://api.maton.ai/connections/{connection_id}', method='DELETE')
req.add_header('Authorization', f'Bearer {os.environ["MATON_API_KEY"]}')
print(json.dumps(json.load(urllib.request.urlopen(req)), indent=2))
EOF
Specifying Connection
If you have multiple SignNow connections, specify which one to use with the Maton-Connection header:
python <<'EOF'
import urllib.request, os, json
req = urllib.request.Request('https://api.maton.ai/signnow/user')
req.add_header('Authorization', f'Bearer {os.environ["MATON_API_KEY"]}')
req.add_header('Maton-Connection', '{connection_id}')
print(json.dumps(json.load(urllib.request.urlopen(req)), indent=2))
EOF
If you have multiple connections, always include this header to ensure requests go to the intended account.
Security & Permissions
- Access is scoped to documents, templates, signing invites, and folders within the connected SignNow account.
- All write operations require explicit user approval. Before executing any create, update, or delete call, confirm the target resource and intended effect with the user.

- Documents must be in PDF format for upload
- Supported file types: PDF, DOC, DOCX, ODT, RTF, PNG, JPG
- System folders (Documents, Templates, Archive, Trash Bin) cannot be renamed or deleted
- Creating signing links requires documents to have signature fields
- Custom invite subject/message requires a paid subscription
- Rate limit in development mode: 500 requests/hour per application
- IMPORTANT: When piping curl output to
jqor other commands, environment variables like$MATON_API_KEYmay not expand correctly in some shell environments
Error Handling
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 400 | Missing SignNow connection or bad request |
| 401 | Invalid or missing Maton API key |
| 403 | Insufficient permissions or subscription required |
| 404 | Resource not found |
| 405 | Method not allowed |
| 429 | Rate limited |
| 4xx/5xx | Passthrough error from SignNow API |
SignNow errors include detailed messages:
{
"errors": [
{
"code": 65578,
"message": "Invalid file type."
}
]
}
Troubleshooting: API Key Issues
- Check that the
MATON_API_KEYenvironment variable is set:
echo $MATON_API_KEY
- Verify the API key is valid by listing connections:
python <<'EOF'
import urllib.request, os, json
req = urllib.request.Request('https://api.maton.ai/connections')
req.add_header('Authorization', f'Bearer {os.environ["MATON_API_KEY"]}')
print(json.dumps(json.load(urllib.request.urlopen(req)), indent=2))
EOF
Troubleshooting: Invalid App Name
- Ensure your URL path starts with
signnow. For example:
- Correct:
https://api.maton.ai/signnow/user - Incorrect:
https://api.maton.ai/user

Questions people ask
- How is authentication handled?
- The proxy injects OAuth tokens automatically; you send requests with a bearer API key in the Authorization header.
- Do I need a paid SignNow plan for everything?
- Custom subject lines and messages on invites require a paid plan; core upload, invite, template, and webhook flows work without it.
- Can write calls run automatically?
- No. Every create, update, delete, move, merge, or invite call requires explicit user approval before execution.
