Access Notion workspaces via a managed OAuth proxy for search, database queries, and reads, with explicit approval for writes.
Documents
Notion MCP
Try itConnect an agent to Notion through MCP with managed OAuth credentials via the Maton gateway.
What it does
Make HTTP calls to api.maton.ai/notion/ and the gateway proxies them to mcp.notion.com, injecting OAuth credentials and managing MCP sessions via the Mcp-Session-Id header. Twelve MCP tools cover searching workspace content and users, fetching pages/databases/data sources, creating and updating pages with markdown content, moving and duplicating pages, creating databases, posting and reading comments, and listing teams and users. Connections are managed through the Maton API with OAuth browser authorization. Write operations require explicit user confirmation, and access stays scoped to the connected Notion workspace.
When to use it
- Search workspace pages, databases, and users with keyword and date filters
- Fetch page, database, or data source content by URL or UUID
- Create, update, move, or duplicate Notion pages with markdown content
- Manage Notion MCP connections and OAuth authorization through the Maton API
The skill document
Notion MCP
Access Notion via MCP (Model Context Protocol) with managed authentication.
Quick Start
python <<'EOF'
import urllib.request, os, json
data = json.dumps({'query': 'meeting notes', 'query_type': 'internal'}).encode()
req = urllib.request.Request('https://api.maton.ai/notion/notion-search', data=data, method='POST')
req.add_header('Authorization', f'Bearer {os.environ["MATON_API_KEY"]}')
req.add_header('Content-Type', 'application/json')
print(json.dumps(json.load(urllib.request.urlopen(req)), indent=2))
EOF
Base URL
https://api.maton.ai/notion/{tool-name}
Maton proxies requests to mcp.notion.com and automatically injects your credentials. The {tool-name} corresponds to the MCP tool name (e.g., notion-search).
Request Headers
MCP requests use the Mcp-Session-Id header for session management. If not specified, the gateway initializes a new session and returns the session ID in the Mcp-Session-Id response header. You can include this session ID in subsequent requests to reuse the same session.
Authentication
All requests require the Maton API key:
Authorization: Bearer $MATON_API_KEY
Environment Variable: Set your API key as MATON_API_KEY:
export MATON_API_KEY="YOUR_API_KEY"
Getting Your API Key
- Sign in or create an account at maton.ai
- Go to maton.ai/settings
- Copy your API key
Connection Management
Manage your Notion MCP connections at https://api.maton.ai.
List Connections
python <<'EOF'
import urllib.request, os, json
req = urllib.request.Request('https://api.maton.ai/connections?app=notion&method=MCP&status=ACTIVE')
req.add_header('Authorization', f'Bearer {os.environ["MATON_API_KEY"]}')
print(json.dumps(json.load(urllib.request.urlopen(req)), indent=2))
EOF
Create Connection
python <<'EOF'
import urllib.request, os, json
data = json.dumps({'app': 'notion', 'method': 'MCP'}).encode()
req = urllib.request.Request('https://api.maton.ai/connections', data=data, method='POST')
req.add_header('Authorization', f'Bearer {os.environ["MATON_API_KEY"]}')
req.add_header('Content-Type', 'application/json')
print(json.dumps(json.load(urllib.request.urlopen(req)), indent=2))
EOF
Get Connection
python <<'EOF'
import urllib.request, os, json
req = urllib.request.Request('https://api.maton.ai/connections/{connection_id}')
req.add_header('Authorization', f'Bearer {os.environ["MATON_API_KEY"]}')
print(json.dumps(json.load(urllib.request.urlopen(req)), indent=2))
EOF
Response:
{
"connection": {
"connection_id": "{connection_id}",
"status": "PENDING",
"creation_time": "2025-12-08T07:20:53.488460Z",
"url": "https://connect.maton.ai/?session_token=...",
"app": "notion",
"method": "MCP",
"metadata": {}
}
}
Open the returned url in a browser to complete OAuth authorization.
Delete Connection
python <<'EOF'
import urllib.request, os, json
req = urllib.request.Request('https://api.maton.ai/connections/{connection_id}', method='DELETE')
req.add_header('Authorization', f'Bearer {os.environ["MATON_API_KEY"]}')
print(json.dumps(json.load(urllib.request.urlopen(req)), indent=2))
EOF
Specifying Connection
If you have multiple Notion connections (eg. OAuth2, MCP), you must specify which MCP connection to use with the Maton-Connection header:
python <<'EOF'
import urllib.request, os, json
data = json.dumps({'query': 'meeting notes', 'query_type': 'internal'}).encode()
req = urllib.request.Request('https://api.maton.ai/notion/notion-search', data=data, method='POST')
req.add_header('Authorization', f'Bearer {os.environ["MATON_API_KEY"]}')
req.add_header('Content-Type', 'application/json')
req.add_header('Maton-Connection', '{connection_id}')
print(json.dumps(json.load(urllib.request.urlopen(req)), indent=2))
EOF
If you have multiple connections, always include this header to ensure requests go to the intended account.
Security & Permissions
- Access is scoped to pages, databases, blocks, and users within the connected Notion workspace.
- All write operations require explicit user approval. Before executing any create, update, or delete call, confirm the target resource and intended effect with the user.

Error Handling
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 400 | Missing MCP connection or invalid tool name |
| 401 | Invalid or missing Maton API key |
| 429 | Rate limited (10 req/sec per account) |
Troubleshooting: API Key Issues
- Check that the
MATON_API_KEYenvironment variable is set:
echo $MATON_API_KEY
- Verify the API key is valid by listing connections:
python <<'EOF'
import urllib.request, os, json
req = urllib.request.Request('https://api.maton.ai/connections')
req.add_header('Authorization', f'Bearer {os.environ["MATON_API_KEY"]}')
print(json.dumps(json.load(urllib.request.urlopen(req)), indent=2))
EOF
Troubleshooting: Invalid App Name
- Ensure your URL path starts with
notion. For example:
- Correct:
https://api.maton.ai/notion/v1/search - Incorrect:
https://api.maton.ai/v1/search
Notes
- All IDs are UUIDs (with or without hyphens)
- MCP tool responses wrap content in
{"content": [{"type": "text", "text": "..."}], "isError": false}format - The
textfield contains JSON-stringified data that should be parsed - Use
notion-fetchto get page/database structure before creating or updating pages - For databases, fetch first to get the data source ID (
collection://...URL)

Questions people ask
- How does authentication work?
- Set the MATON_API_KEY environment variable; the gateway injects OAuth credentials for the connected Notion workspace on every request.
- Does this use the Notion REST API directly?
- No, it uses the Model Context Protocol against mcp.notion.com, with the gateway handling session management and credential injection.
- Can the skill modify my Notion content?
- Yes, but every write operation requires explicit user approval before execution, per the skill's security policy.
