Gmail MCP

Gmail MCP gives an agent search and drafting access to your inbox. Ottermind connects Gmail over OAuth with read-only scope by default; sending and drafting are separate grants you turn on deliberately.

What is Gmail MCP?

A Gmail MCP server exposes the Gmail API through the Model Context Protocol, giving an agent search, read and draft access to a mailbox. Mail is the archetypal case where the useful unit is not a message but a thread: the question is rarely "what does this email say" and usually "what does this thread need from me".

What Gmail MCP gives an agent

  • Search with Gmail's own syntax

Query by sender, label, date or content using the operators the mailbox already understands.

  • Thread-level reading

Read a conversation in order, so a summary reflects the exchange rather than one message in it.

  • Drafting

Compose a reply into the thread it belongs to, kept as a draft for you to review.

  • Read-only by default

Sending and modifying are separate scopes from reading, and are granted deliberately rather than implied.

What the agent can do with Gmail

  • Search mail and summarize a long thread into what it asks of you
  • Draft a reply that matches the thread's context and tone
  • Pull commitments and dates out of a week of mail
  • Send only after you approve the draft, if you granted that scope

How to connect Gmail

  1. 1Open Settings → Connectors in Ottermind.
  2. 2Sign in to Gmail. Read access is granted first; write scopes stay separate.
  3. 3Ask for the outcome you want — the agent picks the tools.

Gmail MCP questions

What is Gmail MCP?

Gmail MCP is the Model Context Protocol interface to Gmail — it lets an AI agent call Gmail directly instead of asking you to copy data across.

How do I connect Gmail to an AI agent?

Open Settings → Connectors in Ottermind and sign in to Gmail. Read access is granted first and write scopes stay separate, so you decide what the agent may change.

Do I need to run a local Gmail MCP server?

No. Ottermind talks to Gmail directly over your authorized account, so there is no local process to keep alive.

Is my Gmail data safe?

The agent only reaches what you grant. Access starts read-only where the provider supports it, write operations ask for confirmation before running, and you can revoke the connection at any time.

Does Gmail MCP work with Claude?

Yes. Ottermind runs on Claude models and speaks MCP, so once Gmail is connected the agent can use it in any task.
