What is Claude Sonnet 4.5?

Claude Sonnet 4.5 is Anthropic's text-and-image-input, text-output model, released September 29, 2025 with a focus on coding and multi-step agents. Its pinned API ID is claude-sonnet-4-5-20250929; the alias is claude-sonnet-4-5. Checked September 8, 2026: Sonnet 5 launched June 30, 2026. The Sonnet product page still has a 4.6 heading, but its release and availability sections describe 5. This page covers 4.5 specifically, including its current limitations.

Current API Capabilities

  • 200K context, 64K output: The version-specific documentation lists 200K context tokens and up to 64K output tokens. The April 30, 2026 release note retired 4.5's 1M beta; its old header no longer increases the limit. Split larger source packets into traceable sections.
  • Extended thinking for difficult steps: Sonnet 4.5 supports extended thinking rather than adaptive thinking. A reasoning budget can help structure a difficult investigation, but it also consumes tokens and time. Compare whether the extra reasoning actually produces a better diagnosis before using it on every request.
  • Calculate the full task cost: Standard provider pricing is USD $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens. A 10,000-input, 2,000-output request costs $0.06 before caching, tools and other adjustments. These are not Ottermind prices. Count failed attempts and review time when comparing models.

Tasks to Evaluate with Sonnet 4.5

Use a real task with a clear acceptance check. These examples are starting points for evaluation, not promises of success.

  • Trace an intermittent UI bug

Provide event timestamps, cache updates and the expected screen state. Ask for competing explanations and a minimal reproduction before a patch. Test the same timing conditions that failed; a working development build alone is insufficient.

  • Plan a change across files

Supply the affected interfaces, existing helpers and a failing test. Request a dependency map and small implementation steps. Review the final diff for unrelated edits and run integration checks across the changed boundary.

  • Review a screenshot against requirements

Pair a screen image with the design requirements and relevant component code. Ask for a prioritized list of mismatches with locations. Verify responsive behavior in a browser; interpreting a screenshot does not prove the interface works.

  • Build a decision brief from sources

Provide dated meeting notes and proposals. Request options, supporting excerpts, unresolved questions and a recommendation tied to your criteria. Check every factual claim against its source and keep assumptions separate from documented decisions.

Keep 4.5 or Evaluate a Replacement?

Where 4.5 can fit

  • An existing evaluation baseline: If your prompts and acceptance tests were tuned on 4.5, keep those results as a migration baseline. Run the same cases on a replacement before switching. Familiarity is useful evidence about your workflow, not proof that an older model is better.
  • Analysis connected to implementation: Keep the diagnosis, source excerpts and accepted plan together as work moves from chat into action. Ottermind provides a connected workflow for that brief; which models and tools you can use depends on your account.

Tradeoffs to check

  • Newer can cost less per token: The Sonnet 5 API guide documents a larger window and adaptive thinking. Its lower base rates make it worth testing, but a new tokenizer and different reasoning behavior mean identical tasks need not use identical token counts.
  • Evidence before more edits: A convincing explanation can still target the wrong component. Ask which observation supports each proposed cause and what would falsify it. If successive patches do not change the failure, stop the repair loop and revisit the reproduction.

What Community Users Report

These launch-period discussions describe individual workflows, not a consensus or a current controlled benchmark. Client behavior and subscription limits also affect the experience.

Faster work in a familiar stack

In a Node.js and Flutter account, the author found 4.5 faster with similar subjective quality to an older Opus-planning/Sonnet-coding setup. Other replies raise cost and usage-limit concerns. Treat this as one workflow report, not a guaranteed speed advantage.

Root-cause diagnosis can stall

In a production debugging discussion, the author reports that 4.5 kept fixing working code despite logs. The eventual explanation involved an older fetch overwriting an optimistic UI update. Replies disagree on speed and correctness; the case suggests testing event order explicitly.

Continue the Work in Ottermind

1

Prepare a bounded brief

Include the source, expected result and a way to check it. For debugging, add the reproduction and logs; for document work, label the sources and required output.

2

Check the model in Studio

Continue to Studio and sign in if needed. Choose Claude Sonnet 4.5 if available to your account and check usage terms. This page does not automatically select the model or guarantee access.

3

Validate and carry the result forward

Run the relevant tests or verify the cited passages. Preserve the accepted result and remaining questions so the next step starts from checked evidence.

Claude Sonnet 4.5 FAQ

Is Sonnet 4.5 retired?

As of September 8, 2026, its overview labels it Legacy, while the lifecycle table lists Active and retirement not sooner than September 29, 2026. That is not an announced shutdown date. Check your provider's schedule before relying on continued access.

Can I still use the 1M context beta?

No on the Claude API: the 4.5 beta ended April 30, 2026, and requests over 200K context tokens now fail. Historical launch examples and community reports of 1M use do not establish current availability.

Does it browse, run code or create images by itself?

Its native output is text. Browsing, code execution and file operations require tools supplied by the host application. Image input lets it analyze a screenshot; it does not make this an image-generation model.

Does Studio include free Sonnet 4.5 access?

This page promises neither free usage nor model availability. It carries your prompt into Studio; access, tools and charges depend on your account. Check those details before starting.
