What is Claude Opus 4.7?

Claude Opus 4.7 is Anthropic's text-and-image input, text-output model for demanding coding and knowledge work, released April 16, 2026. Its API ID is claude-opus-4-7. As of September 8, 2026, Claude Opus 5 is the current Opus model. The product page still has a 4.8 heading but describes 5 in its availability section. This page covers the still-available 4.7 for existing workflows and version comparisons.

Opus 4.7 facts that affect your task

  • Large context, finite response: The current API overview lists 1M context and 128K maximum output tokens for synchronous requests. The 300K output option is a separate Batch API beta. Label source files and reserve response space; a large window does not guarantee complete recall.
  • More image detail to inspect: At release, Anthropic documented images up to 2,576 pixels on the long edge. Use that detail for chart labels, screenshot comparisons or diagram extraction. Ask it to flag illegible regions rather than guess, and check extracted values against the original; higher resolution also consumes more tokens.
  • Budget for the whole attempt: Standard API rates are USD $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens. A request with 20,000 input and 4,000 billed output tokens costs $0.20 before caching, tools or other adjustments. These are provider rates, not Ottermind prices. Retries and reasoning output can change the total substantially.

Four tasks to bring to Opus 4.7

Choose work with a clear acceptance check. A patch, evidence table or annotated comparison gives you something concrete to inspect before continuing.

  • Investigate a difficult bug

Provide the failing case, logs and relevant callers. Ask for competing explanations, a minimal reproduction and the smallest justified patch. Run the reproduction again and inspect the diff; a confident root-cause statement is not evidence that the defect is fixed.

  • Check a screen against a brief

Share the screenshot and the intended behavior. Request a list of mismatched labels, missing states and unclear controls, tied to visible regions. Test the proposed changes in the actual application, since a screenshot cannot establish whether a button works.

  • Reconcile conflicting documents

Attach dated versions with stable page labels. Ask for conflicting claims, supporting passages and unresolved gaps in a single table. Open each cited passage and independently recalculate important figures before using the findings in a decision.

  • Plan a constrained refactor

Supply the current interfaces, tests and behaviors that must remain unchanged. Ask for a staged plan and one reviewable change at a time. Verify callers and regression cases before accepting the next stage, especially when the model proposes extra cleanup.

Choose by reviewed results

Where 4.7 can fit

  • Explicit, demanding work: Opus 4.7 is worth evaluating when a difficult task can be expressed with precise constraints. Keep representative failures in your test set and compare accepted outputs. Provider benchmarks and the model's own checks do not substitute for human review.
  • Carry findings into the next step: Use Ottermind to continue from a debugging brief, screen review or evidence table. Preserve source references and open questions so the next revision has useful context. Available models and tools depend on your account.

Tradeoffs to measure

  • More effort can mean more waiting: Opus 4.7 supports adaptive thinking with high as the default API effort. Test high and xhigh on hard work before assuming max is worthwhile. Its updated tokenizer can count the same text differently from 4.6; compare billed usage, elapsed time and accepted results, not token rates alone.
  • A version swap changes defaults: The 4.7-to-5 migration guide confirms the comparison above. Omitting thinking disables it on 4.7 but enables it on 5, affecting output usage. Both reject non-default temperature, top_p and top_k with a 400 error. Recheck request settings and response parsing before migrating.

What individual users reported

These launch-period experiences are not a consensus or a controlled benchmark. They suggest checks for your own workflow, without establishing how often a behavior occurs today.

Detailed prompts helped one coding workflow

In an April 26 Reddit discussion, jony7 reported better code and reviews with detailed prompts, alongside less consistency. They preferred xhigh over max but explicitly said their token comparison was not strictly measured. Treat that as a test idea, not a cost guarantee.

Small edits still need inspection

In an April 17 Reddit report, lemon07r described repeated unwanted framing in a README despite corrections, in a Junie CLI setup they later identified as low effort. This unverified individual case suggests checking the entire changed passage against the requested style, rather than accepting only the lines explicitly pointed out.

Claude Opus 4.7 FAQ

Is Opus 4.7 still available?

As of September 8, 2026, the API overview lists Active (legacy), with retirement not sooner than April 16, 2027. That is not an announced shutdown date. Check the lifecycle table and your provider before relying on continued access.

Does Opus 4.7 still have Fast mode?

No. The API release notes record its removal on July 24, 2026. Requests using speed: fast on 4.7 return an error. Adjust effort and measure latency on your task; do not assume another Opus version's Fast support applies here.

Can it create images or use my computer?

Opus 4.7 accepts text and images and returns text. Computer actions require compatible application tools; its earlier computer_20251124 tool is distinct from Opus 5's newer computer toolset and browser-use tool. A written plan or generated code is not proof that an action was executed.

Is this free, and is Opus 4.7 selected?

This page promises neither free usage nor model access. Your prompt continues to Studio, where availability, tools and charges depend on your account. Confirm the selected model before starting; the handoff does not select Opus 4.7 automatically.
