What is Claude Opus 4.6?

Claude Opus 4.6 is Anthropic's model for demanding coding and knowledge work, released February 5, 2026. Its API ID is claude-opus-4-6. It takes text and images and produces text. As of September 8, 2026, the latest released Opus is Claude Opus 5, launched July 24. The product page still has a 4.8 heading but describes 5 in its availability section. This page covers the still-available 4.6 specifically.

The current 4.6 API

  • Room for connected evidence: The exact API overview lists a 1M-token context and 128K maximum output. Current context documentation makes 1M the default without a beta header or long-context premium. Keep source labels and reserve space for the response; capacity does not guarantee recall.
  • Adaptive reasoning: Adaptive thinking lets the model decide when to reason more deeply; high is the documented default effort. Legacy extended thinking is deprecated. Test lower effort on small edits where available. Fast mode is no longer available for 4.6: requests with speed: fast run at standard speed and standard rates, according to the pricing documentation.
  • A concrete cost example: Standard API pricing is USD $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens. With 20,000 input and 4,000 billed output tokens, the base cost is $0.20 before caching, tools or other adjustments. These are provider rates, not Ottermind prices; retries add to task cost.

Four tasks to try with Opus 4.6

The launch emphasizes code review and retrieval across long inputs. These tasks turn those capabilities into results you can check, with human review at the important boundaries.

  • Review a change across a repository

Supply the diff, affected callers and interface behavior requirements. Ask for failure paths with file references and a reproducing test, then rank the findings. The useful outcome is a defensible bug report, not a longer list of speculative problems.

  • Trace a claim through a document pack

Provide dated reports and stable page labels. Ask which passages support or contradict one claim, including exceptions in appendices. Open each cited passage before using the conclusion. A large window helps keep related evidence together but does not make citations correct.

  • Explain a variance before making slides

Share a budget, actuals and the formulas behind the totals. Ask for a variance bridge that separates volume, price and missing data, then a short presentation outline. Recalculate in a spreadsheet tool before presenting; text analysis alone does not execute a workbook.

  • Build a specification in testable stages

Start with a product brief, acceptance cases and explicit exclusions. Request a sequence of small implementations; inspect and test each before continuing. This follows the stepwise workflow described in the community report below and leaves room to reject a poor design early.

Where 4.6 fits today

Reasons to evaluate it

  • A stable reference for existing work: A reviewed set of 4.6 outputs can be valuable when prompts or integrations depend on its behavior. Keep both successes and failures to compare a replacement. The Opus 5 overview documents the newer option; matching window sizes do not imply matching answers.
  • Analysis connected to a deliverable: Use Ottermind to carry a review brief, evidence table or presentation outline into the next stage. Keep unresolved assumptions attached to the work so the next revision can address them. Available models and tools depend on your account.

Tradeoffs to measure

  • Equal token rates, different bills: The pricing documentation notes that Claude 4.7 and later use a tokenizer that produces about 30% more tokens for the same text, depending on the workload. Compare actual usage and retries for 4.6 and 5; neither identical rates nor token counts alone establish the cheaper finished task.
  • Client behavior affects the experience: Anthropic's April 23 postmortem traced quality issues to three changes in Claude clients, resolved by April 20; the API was unaffected. Record the client version and effort when comparing runs instead of assuming every change comes from the model.

What users reported

These are individual accounts, not a consensus or a controlled benchmark. They suggest what to test in your own setup, rather than a universal quality or speed ranking.

Stepwise guidance still matters

In a Hacker News comment, Frannky described success with frontend, backend and algorithm work by starting with a product requirements document and executing a plan one step at a time. The author also noted poor ideas that needed guidance. The report supports checkpoints, not unattended correctness.

Simple requests can spend too long thinking

In a March Cursor discussion, users reported several minutes of thinking on simple problems; another saw it only once. Support requested request IDs. This is evidence of a reported failure mode in that client, not proof that today's API always has the same latency.

Claude Opus 4.6 FAQ

Is Opus 4.6 retired?

As of September 8, 2026, its overview says Legacy and the lifecycle table lists Active, with retirement not sooner than February 5, 2027. That is not an announced shutdown date. Partner platforms can have different schedules.

Does 1M context still require the launch beta?

No. Current Claude API documentation lists 1M as the default, with standard pricing and no beta header. The February launch article's beta and premium describe the launch state. Check the limits of the application you actually use.

Can it create images or edit files natively?

Native input is text and images; native output is text. Browsing, code execution and file editing need tools provided by the application. An explanation of spreadsheet changes does not prove those changes were applied.

Is using Opus 4.6 here free?

This page promises neither free usage nor model access. Your prompt continues to Studio, where availability, tools and charges depend on your account. Confirm the model before starting.
