What is Claude Haiku 4.5?

Claude Haiku 4.5 is Anthropic's compact model, released October 15, 2025. It accepts text and images and returns text. Anthropic positions it for responsive assistants and bounded coding work. Checked September 8, 2026: the Haiku product page and version-specific API documentation still identify 4.5 as the current Haiku. The pinned API ID is claude-haiku-4-5-20251001; claude-haiku-4-5 is its alias. New Sonnet or Opus releases do not change this model's identity.

Capabilities and Costs

  • A 200K context window: The API supports 200,000 context tokens and up to 64,000 output tokens. Supply relevant files or excerpts with identifiers; a large window does not guarantee accurate retrieval. Native output is text, so screenshots can be analyzed but image generation requires a separate model or tool.
  • Optional extended thinking: Haiku 4.5 uses manual extended thinking with a token budget, not adaptive thinking or an effort setting. Try it on a difficult exception case and compare accepted results against time and token use. Routine classification may not need the extra reasoning.
  • Price the completed task: Standard provider rates are USD $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. At those rates, 10,000 input plus 2,000 output tokens cost $0.02 before other charges. Caching, batch processing and tools can change the bill; these are not Ottermind prices.

Tasks to Try with Haiku 4.5

Start with a narrow deliverable and an example of an acceptable answer. These are evaluation ideas, not measured performance guarantees.

  • Patch a targeted bug

Provide the failing test, relevant function and expected behavior. Ask for a minimal patch that reuses existing helpers. Run the test and inspect whether the change adds duplicate logic or touches unrelated files.

  • Draft a support response

Pair a customer's message with the current policy and order facts. Request a short reply plus any missing information. Check refund promises, dates and exceptions before sending; the model should not invent company policy.

  • Extract consistent records

Give it a handful of supplier messages and a schema for product, quantity and delivery date. Require null for missing fields and a source excerpt for each record. Validate the output and sample ambiguous dates before processing a larger batch.

  • Turn a patch into release notes

Supply the diff and issue description. Ask for user-visible changes, a migration note and a list of uncertain effects. Verify that each claim follows from the patch and that internal refactoring is not presented as a new feature.

Choose by Accepted Results

Reasons to evaluate Haiku

  • Lower base rates for repeated work: The current model comparison lists Haiku's base rates at half Sonnet 5's and ranks its latency lower. That is a provider comparison, not a promised response time. Measure retries and review effort before deciding which is cheaper overall.
  • A clear role in a larger task: A reviewed plan can turn a broad request into small implementation or extraction steps. Keep the inputs and acceptance checks with each step. Ottermind can carry your brief into a connected workflow; available models and tools depend on your account.

Where to use more care

  • Stop repeated repair loops: If a patch repeatedly fails or creates parallel implementations, revisit the plan and escalate the difficult part to a stronger model. Compare total cost per accepted change, including failed attempts, rather than the first response's token price.
  • Bring current evidence: The documented reliable knowledge cutoff is February 2025. Supply current policies and API references for newer facts. Web access and code execution depend on host tools; a fluent answer does not establish that research or testing occurred.

What Community Users Report

These launch-period discussions contain individual experiences, not a consensus or a current benchmark. Clients, tasks and settings differ.

Focused execution can feel fast

In Haiku for code, commenters describe using Sonnet for planning and Haiku for execution or targeted changes. Some praise speed while others prefer Sonnet's coding quality. The thread supports trying that division of work, not assuming equal quality.

Small edits can still become messy

In Haiku 4.5 Coding Ability?, one user reports new implementations that leave the old approach as a fallback; another reports confused file paths and tool use. Other replies are positive. Treat these as failure cases to test, not a universal defect.

Continue Your Task in Ottermind

1

Define one deliverable

Add the relevant source material, expected output and a concrete check. For code, include a failing example; for support, include the policy that governs the answer.

2

Check availability in Studio

Continue to Studio and sign in if required. Select Claude Haiku 4.5 if available to your account and review usage terms. This page does not automatically select the model or guarantee access.

3

Review and carry the result forward

Check the output against the source, run applicable tests and correct specific gaps. Keep the accepted result and its evidence together for the next task.

Claude Haiku 4.5 FAQ

Is Claude Haiku 4.5 being retired?

At the September 8, 2026 check, the lifecycle table lists it as active, with retirement not sooner than October 15, 2026. That is an earliest boundary, not an announced shutdown date. Partner platforms can have different schedules.

Which API model ID should I use?

Use claude-haiku-4-5-20251001 to name the documented snapshot. The convenience alias is claude-haiku-4-5. A product's model selector and account access are separate from the API model ID.

Is Haiku always cheaper than Sonnet 5?

Its standard input and output rates are half Sonnet 5's, but extra attempts, longer answers and review can erase that saving. Evaluate both on the same completed task with the same acceptance criteria.

Does opening Studio include free Haiku access?

No access or free allowance is promised here. Studio receives your prompt; model availability, tools and charges depend on your account. Verify those details before starting the task.
