Slack MCP server

A Slack MCP server lets an agent search conversations and post updates. Ottermind connects Slack over OAuth with search and channel reads on by default, and keeps posting behind an explicit write scope.

What is Slack MCP server?

A Slack MCP server exposes the Slack Web API through the Model Context Protocol, so an agent can search and read conversations rather than asking you to paste them. Slack is where a lot of decisions actually get made and then lost; the useful operation is usually not "send a message" but "tell me what was decided in this channel and by whom".

What Slack MCP gives an agent

  • Message search

Search across the channels you grant, with the results carrying their channel, author and timestamp.

  • Thread and channel history

Read a thread end to end, or catch up on a channel over a date range.

  • Workspace metadata

Resolve channel and user references so a summary names people rather than opaque IDs.

  • Posting behind a separate grant

Writing to a channel is a distinct permission from reading it, so read-only access stays genuinely read-only.

What the agent can do with Slack

  • Search messages across the channels you grant
  • Summarize a long thread into a decision and its owners
  • Catch up on what a channel discussed while you were away
  • Post an update to a channel once you approve the text

How to connect Slack

  1. 1Open Settings → Connectors in Ottermind.
  2. 2Sign in to Slack. Read access is granted first; write scopes stay separate.
  3. 3Ask for the outcome you want — the agent picks the tools.

Slack MCP questions

What is Slack MCP server?

Slack MCP server is the Model Context Protocol interface to Slack — it lets an AI agent call Slack directly instead of asking you to copy data across.

How do I connect Slack to an AI agent?

Open Settings → Connectors in Ottermind and sign in to Slack. Read access is granted first and write scopes stay separate, so you decide what the agent may change.

Do I need to run a local Slack MCP server?

No. Ottermind talks to Slack directly over your authorized account, so there is no local process to keep alive.

Is my Slack data safe?

The agent only reaches what you grant. Access starts read-only where the provider supports it, write operations ask for confirmation before running, and you can revoke the connection at any time.

Does Slack MCP server work with Claude?

Yes. Ottermind runs on Claude models and speaks MCP, so once Slack is connected the agent can use it in any task.
