Oxford documentary-note referencing: footnote citations, shortened notes, bibliography, OSCOLA pointer. Use for papers requiring Oxford style with footnotes.
The skill document
Oxford Referencing
Build Oxford-style (documentary-note) citations: superscript footnote numbers in the text, full citations in footnotes, shortened notes thereafter, and an alphabetical bibliography. Also flags when a law paper actually needs OSCOLA instead.
Steps
-
Read
references/oxford-quickref.md, then place superscript note numbers at the end of the relevant clause or sentence, after punctuation. Every note number corresponds to a footnote. -
First citation of a source, full form in the footnote:
- Book:
Author, Title of Book (Place: Publisher, Year), p. X. - Chapter:
Author, 'Chapter Title', in Editor (ed.), Book Title (Place: Publisher, Year), pp. xx-xx. - Journal:
Author, 'Article Title', Journal Name, Volume, no. X (Year), pp. xx-xx. - Web page:
Author, 'Page Title', Site Name, Day Month Year, URL.
- Book:
-
Subsequent citations, shortened form:
Author Surname, Short Title, p. X.Useibid.only when the note cites the same single source as the note immediately before it, and with a page number when the page differs. -
Bibliography: alphabetical by author surname, full first-citation form without page numbers,
Place: Publisher, Yearretained. Every footnote source appears in the bibliography; the bibliography may also include background sources not footnoted, if the local guide allows. -
Quotes: the footnote number follows the closing quotation mark; the page number lives in the footnote, not in the running text.
-
Law papers: Oxford general style is not OSCOLA. UK legal writing requires OSCOLA (citing cases as
Smith v Jones [2024] UKSC 1 [15], statutes asAct Year, section). Switch styles rather than forcing Oxford onto case law. -
Verify: note numbers run in sequence with no gaps or reuse; every footnote resolves; first notes are full, later notes are shortened; bibliography matches.
Pitfalls
- Oxford is footnote-based; do not mix in author-date parentheses. That is Harvard's mechanism.
ibid.is fragile: inserting a note earlier in the document silently breaks every followingibid.. Prefer shortened notes in drafts that will be edited.- Word processors auto-number footnotes; pasted text from other sources breaks the sequence. Renumber before submission.
- Web sources still need an access date in the footnote when content may change.
